What is a Memory or T-Shirt Quilt?
A memory quilt or T-shirt quilt is a deeply personal keepsake created from clothing and fabrics that hold sentimental meaning. These quilts are often made from T-shirts, uniforms, baby clothing, concert shirts, sports jerseys, or other clothing and fabrics that represent meaningful moments and memories. Every memory quilt is unique because every collection of garments tells a different story.
At Stitches N Ditches, we transform these cherished fabrics into handcrafted quilts that preserve memories while creating something beautiful and practical that can be used and enjoyed for generations.
We create memory quilts and T-shirt quilts for clients in Kissimmee, Orlando, and throughout Central Florida, and we also work with families nationwide who ship garments to our studio.
Most memory quilts are created as throw-size quilts, but we can design quilts in a wide range of sizes depending on the garments provided.
Common Memory Quilt Materials
Memory quilts can be created from many types of fabrics, including:
• T-shirts and sports jerseys
• baby clothing
• military uniforms
• concert or event shirts
• dress shirts or work clothing
• school or college shirts
• special occasion garments
Memory quilts are often created to celebrate milestones, preserve childhood memories, or honor a loved one by keeping meaningful fabrics together in one place.
Most memory quilts are created as throw-size quilts (around 60"–70" wide), though lap, twin, queen, and larger sizes are also available. You can visit our Quilt Size page for additional information.
How Memory Quilts Are Made – Step by Step
Gathering Your Fabrics: Gather your T-shirts, uniforms, baby clothing, or other meaningful garments you would like included in the quilt.
Design Consultation: We discuss your vision, preferred quilt size, and any design elements you’d like included (such as colors, layout, or patterns).
Preparation and Cutting: Each garment is carefully prepared and stabilized before being cut into quilt blocks that preserve the most meaningful parts of the fabric.
Piecing the Quilt Top: The cut pieces are sewn together to create the quilt top, arranged in a way that highlights your most cherished fabrics.
Layering the Quilt: The quilt top is layered with batting for softness and a backing fabric for durability.
Quilting the Layers Together: The layers are stitched together with quilting patterns that add texture and strength to the quilt.
Binding the Edges: The quilt is finished with a fabric binding that secures the edges and gives the quilt a polished, professional finish.
How Many Shirts or Garments Are Needed?
The number of garments needed depends on the size of the quilt and the type of items being used. For example, a typical throw-size T-shirt quilt often uses around 12 shirts, while memory quilts made from baby clothing or mixed garments may require a different number of pieces.
To help with planning your project, we’ve created a detailed guide that explains:
• how many shirts are needed for common quilt sizes
• how baby clothing and mixed garments are used in memory quilts
• tips for selecting garments that work best in quilts

What Happens to Extra Garments?
Not every garment piece may be used in the final quilt design. Any unused clothing is carefully returned with the finished quilt unless you request otherwise.
Why Choose a Memory Quilt?
Many families create memory quilts to celebrate a loved one, preserve childhood clothing, or keep meaningful garments together in one place.
Preserves Special Moments: From baby’s first clothes to a loved one’s favorite shirts, memory quilts keep cherished moments close.
Completely Unique: Every memory quilt is one-of-a-kind, reflecting your personal story and memories.
Functional Keepsake: Memory quilts provide both comfort and nostalgia, serving as a functional piece of art in your home.
Customizable Details: Add personalized embroidery such as names, dates, or special messages for an extra touch of sentimentality.

Sending Your Garments
Garments can be dropped off locally in Kissimmee, or shipped to our studio from anywhere in the United States.
For helpful tips on preparing and shipping garments, see our Shipping Guide.
Custom Quilt Labels
Many clients choose to add a custom embroidered label documenting the story behind the quilt. Labels can include names, dates, or a short message and are stitched directly into the quilt.
Photo Panels
Photographs can also be incorporated into memory quilts using sublimated fabric panels, allowing special images to become part of the quilt design.
Turnaround Time
Typical turnaround time for memory quilts is approximately 4-6 months, depending on the size of the quilt and the number of garments involved. Though if you have a deadline, contact us for availability.
At Stitches N Ditches, I take great care in crafting memory or T-Shirt quilts that tell your story, preserving memories in every stitch.
Let’s make something awesome together!
