Planning Your Memory Quilt or T-Shirt Quilt

One of the most common questions we receive at Stitches N Ditches is:

“How many shirts do I need for a quilt?”

The answer depends on the size of the quilt and the type of garments being used. This guide will help you plan your project so you know how many garments to gather before sending them to our studio.

T-Shirt Quilt Size Guide

While quilts can be made in any size, most memory quilts fall into a few common categories. See the chart below. The 60 × 70 throw quilt is our most requested size because it provides plenty of space for meaningful garments while remaining easy to use and store.

How Many Shirts Do I Need for a T-Shirt Quilt?

The number of shirts needed for a T-shirt quilt depends on the size of the quilt and the size of the shirt graphics. Most throw-size quilts (around 60 × 70 inches) require approximately 15–20 shirts, while larger quilts such as queen or king sizes may require 35–50 shirts or more.

Most shirts provide one usable panel from either the front or back design. If a shirt includes graphics on both sides, both panels can often be incorporated into the quilt.

Because shirt sizes and graphic areas vary, the following ranges provide enough fabric to allow for a balanced design. Some garments require additional design consideration, such as:

• youth shirts with small graphics
• shirts with pocket logos
• very thin or delicate fabrics
• shirts with unusually shaped graphics

These pieces can usually still be included, but they may require background fabrics or creative layout adjustments.

Tips for Choosing Shirts for a Memory Quilt

When choosing shirts for a quilt, it can help to keep a few things in mind:

• Larger graphics work best for quilt blocks
• Shirts with meaningful images or text are ideal
• Both sides of a shirt can often be used if desired
• Extra shirts provide more design flexibility

If you are unsure which garments to include, sending a few extra shirts allows the best designs to be selected for the final quilt layout.

Memory Quilt Garment Guide

Memory quilts can be created from many types of clothing, not just T-shirts. These quilts preserve garments connected to meaningful moments and life events. Because many garments contain multiple fabric sections, memory quilts often require fewer pieces than traditional T-shirt quilts.

Because many garments contain multiple usable fabric sections, memory quilts often require fewer individual pieces than T-shirt quilts.

Common items used in memory quilts include:

  • button-down shirts

  • flannel shirts

  • baby clothing

  • dresses

  • uniforms

  • pajamas

  • Christmas pajamas or holiday sleepwear

  • lightweight jackets

  • school clothing

  • sports apparel

Holiday pajamas are especially popular because families often keep matching Christmas pajamas worn year after year, making them a wonderful addition to a memory quilt.

Some quilts are designed using many small sections from a large collection of clothing, while others may feature larger pieces from just a few special garments. Even if only one or two meaningful items are available, it is often still possible to create a beautiful quilt by incorporating background fabrics and thoughtful design elements.

Special Elements That Can Be Incorporated

Many memory quilts include meaningful details taken directly from the clothing.

Examples include:

  • pockets

  • embroidered names

  • uniform patches

  • collars

  • buttons

  • printed designs

  • fabric from favorite garments

These elements can be incorporated into the quilt layout to help preserve the character of the original clothing.

When Garments Are Limited

If only a few garments are available, background fabrics and creative layouts can expand the quilt while highlighting the most meaningful pieces.

This allows quilts to be created even when only a small collection of clothing is available.
